What is the CGPA Calculator?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) summarises performance across semesters on a 10-point scale. Employers and universities often ask for its percentage equivalent.

How does it work?

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of SGPAs. Conversion uses CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE) or (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (AICTE and several technical universities), or a custom multiplier.

Formula

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits) ÷ Σcredits
CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5
AICTE: % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Example

SGPAs 8.4, 8.9, 7.8 and 9.1 with 22, 24, 23 and 21 credits give a CGPA of 8.54 — 81.16% on the CBSE formula.

Frequently asked questions

Why multiply by 9.5 for CBSE?

CBSE found that the average of the top performers’ marks was about 9.5 times their grade point, so it adopted 9.5 as the conversion factor.

Which formula does my university use?

It varies. Many engineering colleges follow AICTE’s (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; others use CGPA × 10 or their own rule. Check your grade card or regulations.
