What is the Data Storage Converter?

Data size is measured in bytes (8 bits). There are two conventions: decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) and binary (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes).

How does it work?

Every unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the byte. The value is converted to the byte and then to the target unit, so any pair of units can be converted consistently. Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits.

Formula

1 GB = 1,000 MB
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB
1 byte = 8 bits

Example

A “1 TB” hard disk is 10¹² bytes, which Windows shows as about 931 GB (GiB).

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 100 Mbps connection download at 12.5 MB/s?

Internet speeds are in megabits per second; downloads are shown in megabytes. 100 Mbit ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB.
