How does it work?

The corpus is the present value of a growing annuity: annual expenses rise with inflation and the remaining corpus earns the expected return.

Formula

Corpus = E × (1 − ((1+g)/(1+r))^N) ÷ (1 − (1+g)/(1+r)) + buffer

Example

₹1 lakh a month for 25 years with 6% inflation and 7% returns needs about ₹2.69 crore, plus the buffer.

Frequently asked questions

What if returns equal inflation?

Then the corpus simply equals annual expense × number of years, because real returns are zero.
