What is the Energy Converter?

Energy is measured in joules. Food energy uses kilocalories, and electricity bills use kilowatt-hours, called “units” in India.

How does it work?

Every unit is defined by an exact factor relative to the joule. The value is converted to the joule and then to the target unit, so any pair of units can be converted consistently. Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits.

1 kcal = 4.184 kJ
1 kWh = 3.6 MJ

Example

500 kcal = 2,092 kJ. 1 electricity unit (kWh) = 860 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

Is a food Calorie the same as a calorie?

No. A food Calorie (with a capital C) is a kilocalorie — 1,000 calories.
