What is the Fuel Economy Converter?

India states mileage in km per litre. Europe uses litres per 100 km (lower is better) and the US and UK use miles per gallon, with different gallons.

How does it work?

km/L and mpg are converted with distance and volume factors. L/100 km is the inverse: 100 ÷ km/L.

Formula

L/100 km = 100 ÷ km/L
mpg (US) = km/L × 2.352

Example

18 km/L = 5.56 L/100 km = 42.3 mpg (US) = 50.8 mpg (UK).

Frequently asked questions

Why are US and UK mpg different?

A UK (imperial) gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, so the same car shows higher mpg in UK units.
